Couch to 5k – Guest BFF Kim shares her training pt 4

Written by KPetrovich. Posted in Guest Blog, Running

This week has had it’s ups and downs when it came to running.  I had to take Monday off and try to catch up on sleep after a very busy, but fun, weekend.  Wednesday, I decided it was time to move up to the next training level, Week 4, which according to Couch to 5k, should look like this:

Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then:

  • Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
  • Walk 1/4 mile (or 2-1/2 minutes)
  • Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)

I have been measuring workouts by minutes.  Here’s what my day 1 attempt on Wednesday ended up being:

Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then:

  • Jog 3 minutes
  • Walk 90 seconds
  • Jog 3.5 minutes
  • Walk 3 minutes
  • Jog 2 minutes
  • Walk cool down

I found myself wondering why they jump from running 3 minutes max twice in the previous training interval to running 5 minutes twice in addition to running 3 minutes twice.  It’s going to take me some time to be able to comfortably complete this workout.  Friday’s workout ended up looking like:

Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then:

  • Jog 3 minutes
  • Walk 90 seconds
  • Jog 3.75 minutes
  • Walk 3 minutes
  • Jog 2.5 minutes
  • Walk cool down

Slowly but surely, I’ll add on to the times and eventually get to run the entire thing.  I need to get out of bed earlier – I’m not sure why but it seemed so much easier to pop out of bed in the morning when I first started working out.  I need to mandate early bed time a little more then I have been, because I think that is where I’m setting myself up to hit snooze a couple of extra times.

I’m hoping to be able to meet up Saturday morning with Team Vansome, who is running the New England Relay.  Go get ‘em ladies and gentlemen!

Next up:  An ode to of my top 5 favorite words.
